PG Department of Psychology – ( Shift I )

Overview

The Department of Psychology for postgraduate level (M.Sc. Applied Psychology (Specialization in counselling) was established in the year 2020-21 with a batch of 25 students. The duration of the course is two academic years. The PG program offered by the Department is affiliated with the University of Madras.

The Department periodically provides practical exposure to its students through internships, field visits, valued-added courses, seminars, workshops, and research paper presentations.

The Postgraduate course is structured specifically to train the students in various fields of Psychology through a strong theoretical foundation combined with a completely applied and practical orientation.  The course will provide training in Principal domains of the discipline such as Counselling; Psychotherapy; Contemporary therapies; Social psychology; Cognitive Psychology, Neuroscience; Psychopathology, Research; Training and Development; Organisational and Workplace Counselling. The thrust is to ensure the students master the theoretical know-how, imbibe assessment and intervention skills required for the various fields of interest.

The Department also extends its service through the College Counselling Cell (Sukhada), which offers counselling and therapeutic support to all staff and students within the campus through regular one-on-one sessions, group training programs and psychological workshops.

The vision of the Department is to spread the vitality of mental health professions and create minds equipped to handle a society with varying mental health needs. The Department functions on providing a conducive environment to all its members by encouraging autonomy, inclusivity and ethical thinking. As a core approach, we are mindfully value based on our every choice and deed, believing the best way to teach is to be it yourself!

Eligibility For Admission

Pass with minimum 55% in B.A. / B.Sc. in Psychology/Undergraduate in other disciplines with Psychology as a core subject/Bachelor of Social Work (BSW)/UG degree in Nursing/ Physiotherapy/ BDS/ MBBS. Entrance test will be conducted.

Scope for higher qualification like M.Phil and Ph.D in areas of specific  interest

The employment areas include Welfare Organizations, Schools, colleges, Defense forces, Hospitals, Community and Mental Health centers; Sports; Counselling and Psychotherapy; Rehabilitation Centers; Prisons; Psychological testing; Research; Teaching; Training, Corporate Industries; Government Social Services; Marketing industry; HR Department to name a few.
