From contentment of fresh harvest, warmness of sweet pongal preparation, thrill of jallikattu to excitement for shopping, this gala festival spanning four days’ time is a grand event in the South.

The first day of Pongal is called as the Bhogi Pongal when people burn their old possession and purchase new. The next comes, the Surya Pongal, which is devoted to the Sun God. People worship the sun god and pray for prosperity and health. Then comes the Mattu Pongal, where cattle are worshipped, and Jallikattu celebrations are held in agricultural towns and villages. The last day is Kaanum Pongal when people go meet their loved ones, family and friends.

The special significance of Surya Pongal is that a sweet dish made of rice boiled in milk and jaggery is prepared. People cherish this warm delight with immense pleasure. This dish is served in the temples at this time too, where many devotees gather to receive a their share of the prasadam.
