“PONGAL O PONGAL BY URBAN PEOPLE”

People in the South believes Pongal to be the most auspicious time for new beginnings. Families throng to appliance stores to buy a new TV or Washing Machine; jewellery stores see a surge in sales as it is an auspicious time to buy and since the Tamil month of Thai  also begins around this time, the season for weddings begins and saree shops are crowded with bridal shoppers buying the best of silks.

Pongal in T Nagar is hence celebrated with just the same passion as anywhere else in Chennai. The uniqueness about this place is that it’s a shopping paradise of Chennai, hence it’s more cheerful and chirping during this time than any other area. The market is bustling with happy faces gathered around vendors to select the best of their wares and restaurants are filled with people waiting to eat the Pongal meal. Every other household has a beautiful, colourful kolam at the entrance and the whole spirit of the season resonates at every turn.

The prominence of sugarcane towards the festival, can be seen on the streets, where vendors carry huge lengthy sugarcanes to sell. Not just the ones celebrating Pongal but people from different cultural and religious background relish the sweet taste of the sugarcane. T Nagar celebrates Pongal in a vast and magnificent manner. Happiness is bursting in the air, one can feel the energy and joy of the Pongal season in this locale.
