It is our good fortune that the National Skill Development Council (NSDC) has identified Shasun Jain College as a partner institution in its national level skilling programme by joining hands with the Centre of Excellence – Retail. The College is situated amidst the Chennai Retail Hub T.Nagar which is a great strength for the Centre. The Centre was established on 12th October 2018 with a view to strengthen the neighborhood Retailers in T.Nagar. The centre addresses the needs of small and giant retailers by helping them understand the changing trends in the retail sector through organising several Workshops, Symposium, Website Designing and Techno Mates etc.
The Centre has been conducting events and activities under three main tiers.

Skill Based Courses

Retail Knowledge Series:

The Centre has conducted 27 workshops from the month of May 2021- January 2022 with vibrant speakers from Retail Industry in order to share their knowledge on opportunities and challenges in running business to Retailers and Students.

Health & Hygiene Workshop:

Centre of Excellence-Retail along with PG and Research Department of Commerce in association with R&R hospital Chennai conducted Health and Hygiene practices for Retail Women Employees in order to celebrate Womens’ month. The Employees were given healthy tips and were taught hygiene practices from Doctors of R&R hospital. The Centre gave a complimentary H&H Kit (Kabasura Kudineer, Snaitary Pads and Disposable Pads). Overall 85 employees from various retail stores from Jayachandran Textiles, Velavan Stores, The Chennai Silks attended the workshop.

NSDC Course :

NSDC has conducted an online course for 96 students of Annai Voilet Arts & Science College on the topic Retail Sales Associate. The students were certified under Skill India NSDC, a skill based course on 75% practical and 25% theoretical basis.

NSIC Course :

A ten day (06.02.2023 – 20.02.2023) training programme has been organised for 36 students from our College on IT returns and GST Filing. This course aims to enhance the students on inculcating self employment.

Consultancy Services

Employee Store Operation Procedure Training:

The Centre conducted a Workshop on Employees Store Operation Procedure for upskilling Retail Employees. This workshop inculcated the store operation procedures to improve the grades of the employees and make them eligible for promotion in their workplace. Around 42 employees from Chai Kings, Modfurns, Specsmakers,GRT, Paichaiyappas, Tulasi Pharmacy, Kobbler and Turakhia have attended the Training session.

NSIC Course :

Centre trainers took physical sessions for 30 hours on the Retail Management course at Ummayal Arts & Science College for Women, Karaikudi from 25.07.2022 till 30.07.2022 for 40 Students.

Independence Day Celebration :

The Centre Celebrated 75th Independence day on 13.08.2022 at Viveks Corporate office, Mylapore. An Army personnel was invited as a guest to celebrate the Independence day with Viveks employees. On the day of occasion the team visited five branches of Viveks to conduct games and Activities based on the theme Independence.

Website Designing :

The Centre has built a website for a trust hospital, Dentist, Event management, URNEET, Kerala Farms as consultancy.

Consultancy Video Shoot :

Ms. Neha, III B.Sc Visual Communication created a gratitude video for Viveks employees from their management as a consultancy.

Otto Pvt, Ltd Training Programme :

Around 15 Managerial level personnel from Otto clothing Pvt, Ltd. attended a training programme on 06.09.2022. They were trained by Mr.Christopher on Leadership Skills.

Instore Training Programme :

The Centre has conducted training programme for 130 INSTORE EMPLOYEES (34 per batch) on Personality Development under four batches from 31.01.2023 to 24.02.2023.

Events & Activities

Retail Talk Show:

The Store owners, CEOs, Partners had interview sessions with our host Ms.Shanmugha Priya, Placement Officer. The Chai Kings Owners and Fruit Shop – Greams Road owners attended the interview session and shared their experiences on running the business with the required knowledge and provided some insights to the start ups.

Viveks New Year Sale Internship :

24 students attended 12 day internship from 25.12.2022 till 05.01.2023 at 10 viveks showrooms such as T.Nagar, Vadapalani,Mylapore,Adayar,Porur,Kolarhur,Seliyur and Tambaram for the New Year Sales activity.

Retail Employees Celebration :

Every year, the Centre organises store wise celebrations. In the year 2022, the Centre organised celebrations at 5 retail stores in T.Nagar conducting games & activities and selected five best participation. On the day of celebration the Centre organised a grand event by inviting Trichy Saravana Kumar, Actor, Sarfaraz, and LKS owner. The Centre also launched a short film “Nimirndhu Nil” a life story of a Retail Employee, with the guest and honoured the retail star employees and best participation with Silver coin, certificate and medals on 22.12.2022. The Centre honoured 60 employees as retail star employees from 13 retail stores such as Vasanth & Co, Instore, Velavan, Jeyachandran and Pothys etc.

Video Shoot :

The Centre along with the Department of Visual Communication has created a Short Film “Nimirndhu Nil” – A life story of a Retail Employee with our students as cast.

Retail Bazaar :

For the very first time, Centre has organised the Retail Bazaar 2023 in order to provide space for small, medium and large scale retail in expanding their scope of business. Retail Bazaar was inaugrated by Chief Guest Mr. Chozha Nachiyar, President of Tamil Chamber of Commerce. This initiative was taken by running a bazaar set up at our College Premises by inviting Professors, College students, Parents and school students. This event was organised on 24.02.2023 from 09.00 a.m. to 03.00 p.m. with 35 Retailers. Wide range of items were exhibited on the day of event right from textiles, accessories, fresh vegetables, magic stain remover, reusable note books, handbags and food stalls with fried rice, biryani, chocolates, sugarcane juice,Sandwich, pop corn, spring potato and cotton candy. The stalls set up were KPC snacks, Lavos, Safa foods, Minion Crunch Sandwich, Ting Tong accessories, Vegies Nest – fresh vegetables from mambalam market, KS fancy, Vidhya Tailoring and Self-aid group along with super smart app launch.
